Microsoft 365 Copilot brings AI capabilities directly into the tools your teams already use — Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook, and Power Platform — with Wave 3 (March 2026) adding Copilot Cowork for autonomous multi-step task execution, Agent 365 for enterprise agent governance, and multi-model intelligence combining OpenAI and Anthropic models — since September 2026 including Claude Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 and OpenAI's GPT-6 models. For organisations on the Microsoft stack, Copilot is the fastest path to AI-augmented productivity at enterprise scale.
What Copilot does in the tools you already own
- SharePoint
- Ask a question in plain words and get the answer back with the source document attached, instead of guessing which of four folder trees holds the current version. This is where most rollouts see the first real time saving. It is also where poor permissions hygiene shows up fastest: Copilot inherits the access people already have, so a folder that was over-shared three years ago becomes a search result today.
- Excel
- Describe the analysis in words and Copilot writes the formula, builds the pivot, and explains what it did. It works on the spreadsheets you already have, so there is no rebuild and no new file format. Useful for the monthly pack that one person knows how to assemble.
- Outlook
- Summarises a forty-message thread before you open it, drafts a reply in your own tone, and pulls the commitments buried in the middle out into a list. The summary is the part people keep using after the novelty wears off.
- Teams
- Recaps a meeting you missed with decisions separated from discussion and action items attributed to people. Worth having when half the room is in another time zone.
- Power Automate and Copilot Studio
- This is the part that is actually automation rather than assistance. A described process becomes a running flow: approvals routed, records updated, documents filed. Agent 365 governs those agents centrally through Entra ID and Purview, so they stay visible instead of becoming shadow AI nobody owns.

How it licences
- Pricing model
- Per user, per month, as an add-on licence on top of an existing Microsoft 365 business or enterprise plan. It is not a standalone product.
- Commitment
- Annual commitment, billed monthly or upfront.
- What this means in rand
- Rand pricing moves with your existing agreement, seat count and reseller, so a list figure published here would not match your invoice. We price it against your actual tenant during the assessment. Licences are also rarely the whole cost: budget for the permissions clean-up before rollout.
POPIA and data residency
Where it processes
Microsoft 365 tenant, with South Africa datacentre regions available
POPIA does not ban sending personal information outside South Africa. Section 72 requires that the destination offers comparable protection, or that you have consent or contractual cover. For a Copilot rollout that turns into two practical questions. First, which region is your tenant actually pinned to? South African regions exist, but existing tenants are not moved automatically, so check rather than assume. Second, and more often the real risk: Copilot answers with whatever the person asking already had permission to open. It does not create a data breach so much as reveal one you already had. We audit SharePoint and OneDrive permissions before enabling Copilot, not after.
